Go Paperless

Scanning! I don’t know anything about scanning, but I’ll tell you about it anyway. OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is a good thing. It allows you to search for text within your scanned documents.

Label makers

You can make labels in a few different ways. You can make them on your computer, print them on regular old copier paper and then tape them to whatever you need labeled. Many fonts are available and you can easily change the size and color of the font to create one that you like.

You could buy labels, such as Avery labels which come with downloadable templates. These are good when you have a lot of labeling to do and they’re all the same size. For more information, see the Avery website.

For filing, my favorite labelmaker is the Brother P-Touch labelmaker. P-Touch label makers are small, so you can throw them in your bag if you’re going somewhere for the day, and yet they can handle most of your labeling needs for filing. The tape itself can be pricey for larger projects, such as doing an entire filing cabinet.

Books

Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui, by Karen Kingston. This is my all-time favorite book. I’ve read it maybe four times, and every time I learn something else. Karen is an amazing woman who lives in Bali, travels all over the world to talk about feng shui and clutter, and truly lives the life that she talks about in her books.

You might also enjoy these titles: Organizing for the Creative Person, and Conquering Chronic Disorganization, and Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat, which reveals a connection between clutter and obesity.

Sourcing Products

Sometimes you know just the thing you want to manage your stuff. You can imagine it, you can articulate what it does for you, but you just don’t know where to find it.

Whether it’s a new set of laundry hampers or a complicated library system, I can help you find what’s available.  Don’t settle for off-the-shelf and canned solutions that don’t meet your requirements without first exhausting the novel searches and resources at my disposal.

I strongly encourage you to consider more possibilities than what is normally available at regular retail outlets. Don’t settle for things just because they have been labeled a good solution for you by someone who doesn’t know you. For example, sometimes the best laundry hampers can come from the hardware store — rigid plastic garbage cans that perform better than fancy solutions from a high-priced boutique.

Sometimes the best and least expensive solutions come from the most unexpected places.
